Tips to become a successful wedding photographer:

Wedding photography is something more than just photography, as it involves lot of people and most of the times they are not well known to you. To become a successful wedding photographer you have to understand the psychology of the people and cultivate better interpersonal relationship and behavior.

Though it may be your ‘n’th wedding photography assignment, but, it is ‘once in a lifetime affair’ for the couplet and you cannot afford to take any chance at any point of time during the wedding photography assignment.

The following ‘non-technical’ tips may help to improve your relationship with your clients and establish you as a complete professional photographer.

1. Meet the key people connected with the wedding well in advance and understand their needs. Get the complete minute-to-minute programme schedule for the wedding day so that you can plan your time and photography well.

2. It is better always to have a copy of the wedding card for your reference. To remember the date and the time of the function meticulously, mark it in your year planner, so that you don’t forget the wedding day function due to your other professional routines.

3. ‘Wedding is a showcase of the culture of the people’ hence; try to be familiar with the routines, formalities and customs of the particular wedding group. Don’t assume things by yourself but get to know the clarification in case you have any doubts.

4. Always go by the instructions of the concerned person with whom you had finalized everything regarding the wedding photography.

5. Communicate in a plain and simple language, so that people could understand you clearly and help you in case of need.

6. Choose the correct type of equipments and prepare well in terms of techniques involved in wedding photography.

7. Have total confidence on you and your equipments.

8. There would be lot of people to advise or suggest you in the weddings but; don’t get influenced by them; instead, use your discretion for a better photography. When you had decided to deny their ideas or suggestions, be diplomatic in doing so.

9. Always be punctual and be there at the venues well in advance, so that you are prepared for last minute changes if any in the programme.

10. Try to identify the kith and kin of the couple and include them in the photographs without fail. Show more interest towards the elderly people and the children in the wedding celebration. Elders are more valuable and children are very cute and interesting.

11. Always call the couple by their name to bring their attention into photography. This technique would get you maximum co-operation from the couple.

12. Unless it is very far away, always have your own mode of transport. This would avoid you got held up some where during the wedding, for non-availability of proper transportation.

13. Keep a hand phone ready with you when you are on the move. This would keep you in touch with the wedding parties.

14. Always follow the rules of the locations. (Some churches or temples don’t allow photography or using flashes in side the premises). Never trespass any prohibited areas on the location. By adhering to the rules of the locations you are not only avoiding the confusions but also helping the people involved in the wedding. Skipping few photographs is worth than creating a conflict in an auspicious occasion.

15. Always keep a smile on your face while working; and this would help you to get most of the things done on the locations as a professional wedding photographer.

16. Refuse or deny ideas or opinions politely. This would help you to be looked upon as a friend and a good human being. Apart from your photography skills, your attitude and behaviour could win lot of business in wedding photography.

17. Always get a prior permission before you start doing any formal location wedding portraits or group photographs. This is a must because, you might be rearranging the furniture or using a professional studio flash lights on the domestic power supply.

18. Always remember not to hold on the couple, their relatives and friends for the purpose of photography as it might delay the other proceedings of the wedding sequence.

19. Take quick decisions and go ahead with the photography spontaneously. This would help you to become a accredited professional photographer as people want a photographer to be fast and spontaneous in a wedding celebration.

20. Deliver your work as soon as possible before the people lose the excitement of a wedding. Any good work delivered after the stipulated time would lose its value and taste bad as a cold soup!

21. Present your work in a neat and organized format with the current trend of the market. A good work is like a good food and it should be presented in the best form to taste good.

22. Always remember that a wedding photographer generates his business through the words and reference of the existing clients. A good work is the showcase for your future business. So, treat every wedding photography assignment as very important and always deliver the best product.

A good wedding photography is not just recording of events but should also be communicating to the viewers. In other words, when you feel that the scene has no action, expression, or emotions and could not communicate anything effectively, better don’t shoot that. Always see that your visuals speak for the occasion. Communicating visuals always calls for the attention of the viewers. Hence, be determined to shoot when something is there to communicate.
