Photography Workshop by Zainal Abdul Halim (Reuters)

Location: Cameron Highlands
Duration: Four days (Thursday to Sunday)
Fees: RM650 (excluding lodging and food) as for lodging I am trying to get a place for us to stay on top of hills in Cameron Highlands. Its going to be a 4 person per room or a dorm (depends on the availability) the cost of the room will be shared between you guys. I think its going to be around RM30 - per person for per nights or maybe lesser if we stayed in a dorm. I will come back to you on this when everything is confirmed.
Number of people: 10 – 12 participants. If there are more people who want to attend this workshop, I will break the classes into two and I will get another tutor (maybe will be someone from outside Malaysia) to handle the class.
Tentative dates: 21-24 January 2010.
First of all, bear in mind that this workshop is totally different from what I think most of you have gone through. It’s a tough one and everyone has to think for themselves from the planning stage to the execution. The idea is to give you the understanding of what photojournalism is all about and give you the self-confident as well in handling whatever job being given to you in photography.
Every photographer has to submit their story idea prior to the workshop. The story could be anything and he or she has to work on their story themselves from the planning to taking pictures itself. As we are going to be in Cameron Highlands, I am sure there is a lot of subject that you can work on. You can go out and shoot for the whole day and come back later in the day and submit your pictures. Every night we will sit and talk about the pictures taken that day and try to improve the next day. It’s going to be a photo essay type of pictures and consists of about 10-12 pictures of different angle and subject matters from one story.
I will not accompany you as I want you to think for yourself and create the image as you feel fit for the story. I will guide you prior to the shooting and we will sit down and talk on editing and so forth.
Every photographer has to own their own equipment and laptop for editing. The style of editing will be basic and no manipulation allowed. Ideally if you have two bodies please take it along as I would like you to move freely and concentrate on taking pictures.
Everyone has to have their own transport for them to go about to work on their story. Maybe 2-3 people can work on one story if it happens to be the same, but everyone has to think for themselves what is the best angle to tell their story.
Ideally, bring along your instant noodles and some instants food as the place that we are staying is quite away from the town. Be ready to walk for miles if need to work on your story.
